About UUIDs

A UUID (Universally Unique Identifier) is a 128-bit identifier that is unique across space and time. UUID v4 uses random numbers, making collisions extremely unlikely (1 in 5.3 x 10^36).

UUID v4 Format

  • Format: xxxxxxxx-xxxx-4xxx-yxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx
  • The 4 indicates version 4 (random)
  • The y is one of 8, 9, a, b (variant 1)
  • Common uses: database primary keys, API resource IDs, session tokens
